Technically speaking, there’s no particular food type that should be avoided by the breastfeeding moms. However, physicians suggest avoiding certain food types that may result in mild reactions; for instance, chocolate, cabbage, spicy foods, food items containing high levels of vitamin C etc. What will be the food the doctor will ask you to avoid depends on your health and sensitivity of the baby.
If the mother takes high quantity of garlic, cabbage, chili etc, the baby might suffer from gastric discomforts. There is still no researching supporting the fact that adding these food types to the mother’s diet will harm the baby; however, mothers of different generations will agree with the fact that while breastfeeding one should stay away from these foods.
If you have foods that are strongly flavored, your breast milk’s taste might change. For instance if you eat too much of garlic, the flavor may get induced into your breast milk and you will find your child turning fussy after being breastfed. As the baby gets older, his tolerance level improves and your doctor may allow you to reintroduce some foods you were avoiding earlier into your daily diet.
As a breastfeeding mother, you must also limit or avoid consumption of other food items like pineapple, oranges, lemon, grapefruit and tomatoes. The baby may develop nappy rash from these foods. So, whenever your baby gets nappy rash, check if it is caused by the food item consumed by you. Stop taking the suspected fod item and see whether the nappy rash goes away. If you find that stopping consumption of certain foods helps in removing nappy rashes, then your baby is probably sensitive to those food items.
Other than these, you must also avoid taking caffeinate drinks, chocolates etc. Consult a dietician and prepare a breastfeeding diet plan for yourself to make sure that the food you take does not harm the little one.
